LeEco introduces three new smartphones without headphone jacks

As the race to make smartphones thinner races on, manufacturers have been looking for ways to make devices thinner. The fact of the matter is that smartphones, such as the iPhone 6s, couldn’t physically be substantially thinner without ditching the classic 3.5mm headphone jack. Other phones have encountered the same issue and now, one Chinese manufacturer has been brave enough to be the first to ditch the headphone jack.

LeEco has just introduced three new smartphones, the Le 2, Le Pro 2 and the Le Max 2, which all come without a headphone jack. Instead they rely on the USB-Type C port, which is just beginning to be utilized as a digital headphone jack. Before these phones were announced, the only pair of digital headphones on the market was a partnership from HTC and JBL. To go along with the new phones, LeEco has also announced a pair of in-ear and over-ear USB-Type C headphones.

Outside of the lack of a headphone jack, the phones are decent enough. Both the Le 2 and Le Pro 2 come with a 5.5-inch 1080p display, 3000mAh battery, 8-megapixel front-facing camera, fingerprint scanner and 32GB of storage. Both devices also have a 10-core tri-cluster MediaTek processor, though the Le Pro 2 has a faster variant. The Le 2 has a 16-megapixel rear camera, while the Le Pro 2 has a 21-megapixel rear camera. The RAM also differs, with the Le 2 packing 3GB and the Le Pro 2 bringing in 4GB.

The Le Max 2 is the highest-end of the bunch, offering a 5.7-inch QHD screen, Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB/6GB of RAM, 32GB/64GB of storage, 8-megapixel front facing camera, 21-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization, ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, 3100mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 and tri-band carrier aggregation allowing LTE speeds of up to 325Mbps on compatible networks.

LeEco has priced the Le 2 at roughly $170 USD, with the Le Pro 2 coming in a bit higher at $230 USD. The beastly Le Max 2 starts at $325 for the base model and maxes out at $390 for the most powerful model. All three phones will launch in China initially, but LeEco plans to bring at least one of the phones to the US later this year.
