Huawei’s VR headset is eerily similar to the Gear VR

Virtual reality is immensely popular and manufacturers are all trying to grab a piece of the pie. The latest to get in on the action is Huawei, which just announced the Huawei VR, the company’s VR headset that bears a striking resemblance to Samsung’s Gear VR in both design and function. The Huawei VR, however, works only with Huawei devices, and a mere three of them at that. Compatible devices include the Huawei P9, P9 Plus and Mate 8.

Using the Huawei VR is much like using the Gear VR. Users can open the VR app on their phone, pop open the front cover on the Huawei VR and insert their device into it. To interact with the app, the right side of the headset features a touch panel, back button and volume keys. The headset features a 95-degree field of view and also contains an anti-blue light filter to make it easier on your eyes. Users should also be aware that Huawei’s devices only pack 1080p displays, so graphics may not appear as crispy as they would on some competitor’s headsets.

Additionally, the Huawei VR is designed in such a way that it prevents users from wearing glass while using the device. That being said, the lenses of the device are adjustable for myopia, down to -7.00.

Huawei is pushing the content as a main selling point. At launch, the Huawei VR app will provide over 4000 free movies, 40 free games, 350 panoramic images and 150 panoramic tours.

There’s no word on pricing or a release date yet, but rest assured, we’ll keep you posted when Huawei announces that information.
