Shoot Troubles, Not Users w/ Alex Boag-Munroe – XDA:DevCon 2014
In presenting the various sessions from XDA:DevCon 2014, we’ve mainly talked about about development. We’ve done so by covering topics ranging from robotics with Nvidia and Robotics w/ Barrett Williams to open source with Quo Vadis, Open {Source, Standards, World}? w/ Jan Wildeboer, and even Building Wearable Apps with Android w/ Andreas Göransson. There is, however, one part of developers’ lives that not many enjoy: users and troubleshooting. Today’s talk is from Alex Boag-Munroe, and he talks about troubleshooting.
Boag-Munroe is a 17-year IT professional, who has spent 13 years as a Unix Systems Administrator. When it comes to troubleshooting and users, he has seen it all and knows how to get to the root of the problem. He describes himself as a happily married Linux hobbyist, grumpy Internet user, Star Trek fan, and football (i.e. soccer)fanatic. His presentation is entitled, Shoot Troubles Not Users.
Everything is great until it isn’t, at which point you need to figure out why. In his session, Boag-Munroe talks about getting better at troubleshooting and how it not only helps you figure out the issues, but also helps your relationship with end users. This talk covers how to be a better troubleshooter and maybe even enjoy the process. The journey is perhaps more valuable than the destination. Learn to love interacting with users and troubleshooting instead of falling into the trap of thinking that the problem resides between the keyboard and chair.
Be sure to stay tuned for more exciting xda:devcon 2014 coverage.
