Android Lollipop, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player unveiled

Android 5.0 is here, along with two new Nexus devices. As many has suspected, Google has christened Android 5.0 as Lollipop and claims that it’s the company’s “most ambitious release” yet. The new software packs in over 5,000 new APIs for developers and the new Material Design language which brings consistency to the platform across multiple hardware devices. Some other Android Lollipop highlights include multiple user accounts, content (songs, photos, apps, and even recent searches) syncing across devices, notification customization, battery saver mode which extends the life if your devices by an additional 90 minutes and the ability to unlock your phone or tablet when paired with a trusted device. 

With the official Android 5.0 announcement out of the way, the next thing on the list is the Nexus 6 by Motorola. The new Nexus smartphone features a 6-inch QHD display (493 ppi), 13 megapixel camera with optical image stabilization, 2 megapixel front-facing camera , Snapdragon 805 quad-core 2.7GHz processor and a Adreno 420 GPU, 3220 mAh battery which promises 24 hours of use on a single charge and the option of 32 or 64GB of storage.

The fabled HTC Nexus 9 was also revealed, sporting an 8.9″ IPS LCD display, 64-bit NVIDIA Tegra K1 processor clocked at 2.3 GHz, Kepler DX1 GPU, 16 or 32GB storage options, 8MP rear camera, 1.6MP front camera, a massive 6700 mAh battery HTC’s BoomSound front-facing speakers are also making an appearance. The Nexus 9 will be available in black, white and beige with aluminum trim along the edges of the table.

The one device that didn’t make much of an appearance in the news before today’s announcement is the Nexus Player, running Android TV. The Nexus Player is built by Asus and allows users to stream movies, music and videos to an HDMI connected display or TV. But it also acts as an Android gaming console thanks to its Bluetooth gamepad. Since the Nexus Player runs Android 5.0, Google is hoping game developers will user all the latest API’s available to them so that users can play their games on the Nexus Player while at home and continue enjoying their game where they left off on the tablet or smartphone.

Pre-orders for the Nexus 9 and Nexus Player start on October 17th, but Nexus 6 pre-orders are not expected until October 29th. The Nexus 6 will be priced at $649 without a contract, the base level Nexus 9 will be priced at $399 and the Nexus Player carry a $99 sticker price.
