No Moto X (2014) Developer Edition for Verizon, says Motorola

Remember how Motorola offered a Verizon version of the Moto X Developer Edition last year? Well we hope that you aren’t holding your breath for a similar version of the Moto X (2014), because it looks like you’ll be waiting for a long, long, long time.

Punit Soni, VP of Product Management at Motorola, has revealed that there won’t be a Developer Edition of the Moto X (2014) for Verizon. These Developer Edition models feature unlockable bootloaders that allow owners to tinker with the device and easily load custom ROMs.

While Soni didn’t go into detail about why there won’t be a Verizon-flavored Moto X (2014) Developer Edition, we have a guess. As Android Police notes, Motorola likely didn’t sell enough models of the original Verizon Moto X Developer Edition to warrant doing the same with the new Moto X. That’s probably due to a combination of most consumers not caring about the status of their phone’s bootloader as well as the device’s high initial price tag.
