Today it once again becomes legal to unlock your phone

If you don’t remember, cell phone unlocking was made illegal not too long ago. You had to do it through your carrier, and as you can imagine, the carrier isn’t always happy to unlock your device. If you’re still in a contract, your phone is staying locked to your carrier. This understandably pissed off a lot of people.

There was a public outrage, with petitions on many sites reaching hundreds of thousands of signatures. This prompted the government to act, and surprisingly, we got our way. It is now completely legal to unlock your cell phone, so you won’t have to go begging your carrier to do it for you. This gives us the freedom to actually use the devices we purchased in the way we want.

A lot of people these days doubt the power of regular folks standing up for what they believe in. Sure, this isn’t the best example of people bringing change, but it is still a pretty decent one. President Obama will be signing this bill today, so enjoy your regained freedom!
