Samsung Galaxy S5 Active hitting AT&T, will remain unscathed thanks to toughened body

Following some hands-on videos and close-up images of the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active that’ve surfaced in recent weeks, today we’re getting yet another look at the ruggedized device. This time, though, the images are slightly more official.

AT&T today announced the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active, which is exclusive to Ol’ Blue, just like the Galaxy S4 Active before it. The Galaxy S5 Active is a toughened version of the regular Galaxy S5, sporting and outer shell that’s IP67 rated and is shock resistant, water resistant and dustproof. AT&T says that the S5 Active can survive being submerged in up to 3 feet of water for up to 30 minutes.

Outside of its rugged exterior, or perhaps inside of it, the Galaxy S5 Active is fairly similar to the Galaxy S5 that launched earlier this year. The S5 Active’s full spec list is as follows:

  • 5.1-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display
  • 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor
  • 16-megapixel rear, 2-megapixel front cameras
  • 16GB internal storage
  • microSD slot with support for cards up to 128GB in size
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 4G LTE connectivity
  • 2800mAh battery
  • Android 4.4 KitKat running beneath Samsung’s TouchWiz UI
  • Ruby Red, Titanium Gray, Active Camo Green color options

AT&T is launching the Galaxy S5 Active on its website and in its stores today, May 30. Pricing for this new Galaxy is set at $199 with a 2-year contract, $27.50 per month with AT&T Next 18, $35.75 per month with AT&T Next 12 or $714.99 without a commitment.

Many folks have noted that the regular Galaxy S5 offers some water resistance, but the Galaxy S5 Active kicks things up a notch with its shock-resistant shell. Thankfully, the Galaxy S5 Active doesn’t trade toughness for weaker specs, meaning that buyers are getting a high-end smartphone that can stand up to their adventures without skipping a beat.

Now that it’s finally on store shelves, are any of you thinking about making the Galaxy S5 Active your new travel mate?
