HTC M8 Ace leak tips flagship specs with plastic body, affordable price tag

Remember that “HTC M8 Ace” that showed its red face in a leaked render earlier this month? We didn’t know much about the device at the time, but that’s changed today thanks to a new report that has shed quite a bit of light on the unannounced HTC handset.

According to one of Engadget’s “reliable sources,” the HTC M8 Ace will pack a pretty respectable feature set that includes a 5-inch 1080p display and 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, both of which are features found in the flagship One (M8). One way that the two phones will differ, though, is in their construction: while the One (M8) is made of aluminum, the M8 Ace is expected to be made of plastic.

The news of a plastic-bodied M8 Ace may not be terribly exciting, but you may be more into the phone once you learn about its pricing. While an exact cost isn’t yet known, it’s expected that the M8 Ace will be much cheaper than the One (M8) thanks to its plastic frame. Chinese site TMTpost suggests that the M8 Ace’s pricing could come in at CN¥3,000 ($480 USD) and that it could launch as early as next month.

This is the second time that we’ve heard rumblings about a plastic version of the One (M8), and while the device is still very much a rumor, today’s report does give it a bit more credence. It might seem strange that HTC would want to release a plasticized One (M8) when it constantly highlights the One (M8)’s aluminum frame as a major selling point, but such a device could help get HTC hardware into the hands of more consumers, especially if the M8 Ace’s rumored specs hold true.

What do you make of this new rumor? Would you buy a plastic M8 Ace over an aluminum One (M8) if it saved you a couple hundred dollars?
