Chromebook shipments to hit 11 million in 2019

In 2013, 2.1 million Chromebooks were shipped. By 2019, that number is expected to reach 11 million. With an increasing set of utilities that blur the lines between the browser dependent device and a traditional Windows or OS X computer, Google has made Chrome OS part of the equation, and their Chromebook lineup is likely going to continue disrupting the market.

This all comes to us via ABI Research, who note the device selling price as a big attraction for users. At a median price of $338 (likely a lot less if you remove the Pixel from the equation), the Chromebook makes a home in just about any budget. “This truly budget-driven device is a disruptive force to the portable PC market” said research analyst Stephanie Van Vactor.

The PC market in general is slumping, which was also highlighted by ABI. In 2013, ABI notes PC sales declined 7.4% year-over-year. Even more troubling for everyone not making a Chromebook, sales are expected to continue their slide into 2019 as both Chrome OS and other form factors contribute to the slow downward trend for PCs.

ABI sees cloud solutions as a large factor for inciting change, but they caution against callng it a done deal just yet. This all depends on customer reaction and implementation to the market, and devices on offer. Consumers have a growing interest in Chromebooks, but do they signal that a computer may not even be necessary in their lives? Time will tell.
