Chromecast sales number in the millions according to Sundar Pichai

The Chromecast has become a popular little device. Despite talking about it so much and recommending it endlessly, we can’t really claim too much credit for that. But according to Sundar Pichai, head of Android and Chrome, the Chromecast has sold “millions” of devices. No solid number was given, but that’s impressive nonetheless.

Even launched in a single market with limited functionality and neutered developer support, the low price and ease of use captivated many. Plug the little dongle into a spare HDMI port and outlet, set it up with your smartphone, and you can suddenly stream supported media from your Android or iOS device wirelessly. The fact that it worked with iOS devices probably helped move units as well.

Recently, Google has opened up the SDK to developers. This has resulted in quite a few apps integrating Chromecast support, offering more streaming options for users. This $35 dongle is far more useful than it ever has been. However, there is still a way to go. With more support and Google’s improvements this device can become even more popular. How many of you own a Chromecast? How many of your friends bought one?
