Xiaomi introduces ‘Redmi’, a new device lineup for the world outside of China

Xiaomi has introduced a new brand this morning, and it’s one that will be available to the world outside of China. Dubbed “Redmi”, not much was offered in the way of device specs or other details. The announcement did allude to it being much like the Hongmi for China, though.

Via the product page, the Redmi is only noted as being a variation on the Hongmi brand, with not much else being mentioned. On his Google+ page, Hugo Barra introduced us to Redmi, but again — no product info. He did note it would be coming to Singapore “soon”, but had nothing to say about an international rollout.

If the Redmi is indeed the Hongmi for a worldwide audience, we’re excited. In keeping with the same price point, the Redmi smartphone could debut at around $130, and offer a 4.7-inch 720 x 1280 display with a quad-core MediaTek 1.5GHz processor. There would likely be 1GB RAM and 4GB memory onboard, with a microSD card slot for additional storage. The Hongmi also has an 8MP/1.3MP camera array, and Runs Android 4.2 with a slight skin.

Though not a spec-heavy monster, it does bring an attractive price point. If Xiaomi intends to roll this out to a wider, worldwide audience — we’re ready to see it. It’s nothing new to Xiaomi, who make good devices at great prices, but it would be a new concept for the world outside of China. We loved the Moto G for this reason, so more devices in that mold are just fine with us.
