[MWC 2014] Qualcomm announces the 801 chip along with their new Quad-Core Snapdragon 610 and Octa-Core Snapdragon 615 chips

Mobile World Congress 2014 is now underway and like always we can expect a ton of new Android phones and tablets to be announced during the event from just about every manufacturer that is out there. Qualcomm has announced a few new chips that they will be launching with one being an improved version of their 800 series while the other two announced chips are the new 64-bit quad-core Snapdragon 610 and the new octa-core Snapdragon 615 chip.

Starting with the new Snapdragon 801 chip, this new addition to the 800 series is sort of a middle ground between the recently announced 805 chip and the current 800 chip. The Snapdragon 801 chip is just a bit of an improvement over the current 800 chip, with what Qualcomm says are performance improvements all around but not as much as the 805 offers.

The bigger news is the announcement of the new 610 and 615 chips. Both are 64-bit chips, which is now becoming the new standard as of late, with the 610 being a quad-core processor and the 615 being an octa-core processor. For clarification, that's 4-cores for the 610 and 8-cores for the 615. Both chips will be using Cortex-A53 cores which uses a version of ARMv8 which is why they are now 64-bit chips.

As for the GPU that will be coming with these new 600 series chips, both will be featuring a new Adreno 405 GPU which supports features like DirectX 11.2 and OpenGL ES 3.0. Of course the entire 600 series also support 4G LTE as well as support of the same Qualcomm power management, audio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, RF, and RF360 solutions.

We should start seeing devices with 610 and 615 chips hitting the market in the fourth quarter of 2014.
