LG announces the G2 mini and it’s as disappointing as most other mini phones

After LG teased the G2 mini last week, some of us started getting high hopes for the device. LG makes some nice hardware, and if it could pull off a small handset with big specs, it would make a lot of people happy. Sony has shown that that’s not an impossible task with its Xperia Z1 Compact, which is kicking ass in the small phone department. Unfortunately, we didn’t get what we were hoping for from LG.

LG officially announced the G2 mini today, and it’s an incredibly underwhelming mini version of the flagship G2. The G2 mini features a 4.7-inch display with a 960×540 resolution, a choice of either the Snapdragon 400 or Tegra T4i processor, an 8-megapixel camera, a 2,440 mAh battery and 8GB of memory with a microSD slot. The “G2 mini” name is not a good fit for this device because it is not a mini G2. Instead, it’s an entirely different, low-specced phone.

The G2 mini will launch with Android 4.4 KitKat and LG’s full suite of custom software. It’ll debut in Russia and surrounding countries around it starting in March and will launch across Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East afterward.

LG’s new G2 mini is definitely not a phone designed for the enthusiast. I wish that LG would have made it a separate, low-end device and gone on to introduce a good G2 mini. Apparently Android manufacturers still have a lot to learn from Sony’s approach.
