While we normally focus on technological advances that companies are bringing to market, any sizable organization is going to attract attention related to other disciplines needed for a successful business. Motorola recently granted an interview with AdAge about their marketing plan for the Moto X and in the course of that interview, let loose details about the release for the new device on the major U.S. carriers. We had already seen evidence that Verizon would have the device starting August 23rd. According to the AdAge interview, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T will also have the Moto X available for sale on their shelves the same day.

One area where the carriers will differ is in customization options. AT&T has the exclusive rights to offer all the different colors and customization options via the MotoMaker online app. That exclusivity period will last until early November at which point the other carriers will be able to make customization available. Until then, Sprint, Verizon and T-Mobile will only be offering black and white versions of the Moto X.
The customization options for the Moto X is a key feature of the phone that Brian Wallace, Motorola’s VP for global brand and product marketing, thinks will be compelling enough to enable Motorola to gain market share from Apple and Samsung. Wallace also indicated Motorola does not plan to spend huge sums of money marketing the Moto X. Whatever marketing is conducted will focus more on the device being similar to a fashion accessory as opposed to a piece of technology. Wallace is pushing the idea of the smartphone being an expression of who you are.
