[Bonus Round] Forest Of Doom, Twin Blades, SlamBots, Gangstar City, After Earth, And The Boomerang Trail

Welcome to the latest entry in our Bonus Round series, wherein we tell you all about the new Android games of the day that we couldn't get to during our regular news rounds. Consider this a quick update for the dedicated gamers who can't wait for our bi-weekly roundups, and don't want to wade through a whole day's worth of news just to get their pixelated fix. Today we've got the latest RPG-book from Tin Man Games, a frantic nun-based beat-em-up, and interesting take on the jump game, a new pseudo-entry in Gameloft's Gangstar Rio series, another blockbuster licensed title, and an interesting indie puzzler. Without further ado:

Forest of Doom

Tin Man Games has made a small but vocal fanbase out of their unique titles, which are an interesting mix of traditional role-playing board games and Choose Your Own Adventure-style books. Their latest entry, Forest of Doom, goes back to the roots of the former with a storyline you might find ant any Dungeons & Dragons game. Tin Man's games aren't for everyone, and they're generally expensive, but like Kairosoft, their fans will generally shell out for them as soon as they're published.

Nostalgia overload! Fighting Fantasy returns with Ian Livingstone's classic, The Forest of Doom. Take part in one of the classic gamebook experiences that introduced a whole generation to fantasy role-playing games! Computer gaming was in its infancy and it was the early days of tabletop RPGs when The Forest of Doom exploded into bookshops in the early 80s, proudly displaying Iain McCaig's iconic cover. You can relive the adventures in Darkwood Forest on your Android phone or tablet, lovingly updated for digital devices. Presented in full colour with realistic physics-based dice rolling for battles, auto-mapping, an auto-updated adventure sheet and stat keeping.

Twin Blades

BulkyPix's latest game looks a lot like a mix of the old Metal Slug and more conventional beat-em-ups, with a surprisingly awesome visual design. You play as a tiny nun with a pistol, machine gun, scythe, and mini-nukes, because why the hell not? (Also the gun sometimes shoots fire or ice.) Her mission isn't specifically mentioned in the app description, but it involves killing zombies and oversized bosses. It's a safe bet that she isn't interested in passing around the wine and crackers. Strangely, the game's URL says "freemium" even though it's $3, so prepare for in-app purchases.

TwinBlades is a frantic shooter game set in a medieval era with unique manga-like graphics. Help the nun defeat evil with some heavy zombie-killing action across multiple environments, venture through the city market, the cemetery, a chapel in ruins and the city's outskirts to purge the town of all its living-dead inhabitants. Buy new skills and powers and upgrade them as you progress day after day. Manage carefully your energy by slicing zombies with your mighty scythe in order to use the destructive powers of your artillery!

SlamBots

If Doodle Jump and Metroid had a baby, it might look something like this. SlamBots is incredibly simple - just guide your flamboyant character around a 2D stage with tilt controls, smashing everything you can. The objective is to kill all the bad guys instead of ascend to some goal, and to that end, powerups will help you slam through obstacles. Like so many mobile games, this one revels in its pixel art and chiptunes.

SlamBots! SLAM your way through swarms of evil robots in this action packed arena battle game. Use an array of spiky slamming machines to crush the enemy, rack up massive scores, and power up your skills. Slam the night away in multiple arenas, unlock various characters, mostly it's about slamming (touch and hold the screen to Slam!).

Gangstar City

The Gangstar Rio games are Gameloft's best attempt to recreate the magic of Grand Theft Auto. It's strange, then, that the newest entry is more like Sim City than Saints Row. In an interesting combination, players will have to strategically manage both their illegal properties and the foot soldiers that maintain them. It's a free download, so be on the lookout for Gameloft's generally reasonable in-app purchases.

After Earth

After Earth is an upcoming sci-fi blockbuster starring Will Smith and Will Smith's Son, doing their best Avatar impression. The mobile game seems to have gone for a similar lack of imagination, including both endless runner and Infinity Blade-style reaction fighting elements. 20 levels are included, but multiplayer is limited to online leaderboards. The price is a buck, and the download is a surprisingly small 113MB... so don't expect a long playtime.

After Earth is an all-new game based on the film where you can slide, leap and fly through perilous terrain, and slice and dice evil creatures that lurk in the dark with your cutlass sword. Not your typical action-running game – you can confront and defeat an array of vicious creatures in epic battles, freefall, zipline and more! Fight for survival and defeat your enemies—but whatever you do, do not succumb to fear!

The Boomerang Trail

Here's a simple little puzzled game with a Down Under theme. Throw the boomerang and try to collect all the tokens, avoiding obstacles and setting up trick shots. Special boomerangs will let you shoot multiple paths at once, and there are plenty of levels to occupy your time. I can't help but think that players will want to punch that kangaroo in Aboriginal dress, though - he's way too similar to the dog from Duck Hunt.

Take to the Australian outback and master the hunters trail! Follow the kangaroo spirit through the Australian wilderness, along your trail to enlightenment and learn the ancient aboriginal art of ‘Rang’ throwing. A wonderfully simple throwing mechanic will allow you to quickly become skilled at throwing Boomerangs, Splitterangs and Kaboomerangs! There are many trails to complete and tokens to collect while avoiding the Australian wildlife, and testing your skills at ‘Rang’ throwing.
