34 Best (And 3 WTF) New Android Apps And Live Wallpapers From The Last 2 Weeks (5/7/13 - 5/21/13)

Welcome to the roundup of the best new Android applications, games, and live wallpapers that went live in the Play Store or were spotted by us in the previous 2 weeks or so.
This is the app roundup.

Featured App

Clueful

Today's roundup is presented by Clueful from Bitdefender. Clueful is a privacy app that does more than most of the similar Play Store offerings we've seen thus far. It actively monitors apps being downloaded from the Play Store, displaying their permissions, plus their capabilities to leak private information. If an app's permissions are overly broad, or it matches up to a harmful app in Bitdefender's database, you'll get an immediate alert, and since all apps are analyzed in the cloud, battery drain is minimal. Clueful will also monitor apps that are updated, just in case any of them add sneaky new permissions after they're installed. Based on your apps and their permissions, your device gets a total privacy score.
Clueful is a free download for devices running Android 2.2 or later.
--
Clueful for Android is a FREE product that shows you how installed apps use, and possibly abuse, your personal information and treat your PRIVACY. You'd be surprised how many things an app can learn about you. Without you ever knowing it. Clueful is like your own personal “Privacy Consultant” giving you detailed info as to what your installed apps are doing in the background without your knowledge. It checks your apps against Bitdefender’s constantly updated Cloud database, calculates your device’s “Privacy Score”, and then informs you as to which apps are sacrificing your privacy.
Did you know that apps can:
  • Leak your phone number, e-mail address, contacts from address book to aggressive ad networks or third-parties
  • Play audio ads while you’re on the phone
  • Spam you in the notification bar, even if not accessed
  • Send your password unencrypted over the Internet, a password that can be easily intercepted
  • Upload your calendar
  • Read your browsing history, which contains sensitive data
  • Read and send SMS with or without your permission, thus incurring charges to your bill
  • Intercept SMS
  • Make phone calls with or without asking for your permission
  • Monitor your phone calls
  • Upload your device ID. (This unique ID can be used by developers, advertisers and analytics tools to track your location or behavior across more than one app)
  • Track your location and share it with third-parties
  • Access your photos
…and many more. Really know you apps with Clueful!

Hangouts, nee "Babel", is finally here. While it's not the all-encompassing communication app that some of us were hoping for, it is the new interface for both Google Talk and Google+ hangouts, so you'd better get used to it. It works off of both your Google+ circles and ye olde Talk contact list, with an interface that scales for both smartphones and tablets. Nice: alerts finally sync across devices. Not so nice: it's now much harder to see who's active and available.
--
Hangouts brings one-on-one and group conversations to life with photos, emoji, and video calls for free. Connect with friends across computers, Android and Apple devices. Brought to you by Google.
● Say more with photos and emoji.
● See when people are together in Hangouts, when they’re typing, or whether they’ve seen your message.
● Turn any conversation into a video call with up to 10 friends.
● Message friends anytime, even if they're not connected right now.
● Use Hangouts on computers, Android and Apple devices.

Apex Notifier

Apex Launcher has become one of only a few go-to home screen replacements for Android 4.0 and later. The second major revision to the app brings support for homescreen notifications (the little number tickers above app icons) via this secondary app. Most of the stock email/messaging apps are supported, as are their alternatives from Samsung and HTC. It's even got extended support for DashClock (4.2 and above).
--
We decided to make the notifications feature a separate extension app for better permission management and easy integration with DashClock. With this change, we were able to remove a few sensitive permissions from Apex Launcher, so users of the free version won't have to grant those permissions. When used with Apex Launcher Pro, unread counts will show up in badges on application icons. Please enable Apex Notifier in Apex Settings > Notification settings. When used with DashClock Widget, Apex Notifier displays useful information from various sources. Please enable Apex Notifier in DashClock Extensions > Add Another Extension > Apex Notifier. You may enable up to 3 extensions for DashClock.

Got a fancy new Asus Cube? Then use this app from the noted Google TV hackers at, uh, GTVHacker to root that sucker. It will also patch your Flash Player to get rid of mobile restrictions on some sites, and even clean up after itself by patching the vulnerability that allows its own root exploit. Good on ya.

Splay Launcher

Imagine if SwipePad was both your launcher and phone manager. That's the basic idea behind Splay Launcher, a unique control screen operated entirely by side-swipes and gestures. It would surely take some getting used to, but for the right kind of user I could see it changing the way they operate their phone. This might not work as well on tablets or the largest of recent smartphones.
--
Welcome to the Beta version of the Splay©, a unique home launcher for Android devices that puts your own activity preferences at the heart of your mobile experience. Set the Splay as your default home screen and start enjoying a single hand operation with a fast, smooth and efficient access to your most essential activity using just one finger. Holding the device in one hand, and simply swipe your finger or thumb across the home screen to access your phone, messages, music, apps and more.

Cydia Substrate

Cydia is a household name in the realm of iOS mods, and their first Android application works in the same vein. The basic idea is that root users can freely modify other Android apps via the Substrate platform, usually with extensions, from the Play Store or elsewhere. Because some of these mods might not be the most stable things around, the developer has included a way to disable Substrate on boot (hold down volume up) and recommends having regular backups handy.
--
Substrate is a platform for customizing software. Due to limitations of the Google Play Store it must be installed separately, but its primary purpose is to support other products: users should not expect Substrate itself to do anything interesting. Instead, it should be thought of as enabling your device to support other things you may install. Products that use Substrate are able to modify any other program, whether it came with your phone or was installed later, or whether it was developed by Google or by a third-party developer. These kinds of changes carry an inherent risk: changes to the underlying software being modified may break the modifications ("extensions") you install.

WinterBoard

...and here's the first app to take advantage of Cydia Substrate. WinterBoard is a theme engine that goes beyond the standard set by the various CyanogenMod themes out there (though these, as well as popular launcher themes for ADW/Nova/Apex, are supported) without the need for a custom ROM. Changes can be applied with a soft reset. (Note: WinterBoard broke SwipePad for me. Bummer.)
--
WinterBoard is a "theme engine" that allows you to use the numerous themes you may find in the Google Play Store on your device without having to install custom ROMs or use custom launchers. It allows you to use almost any launcher icon theme with your stock launcher and supports "Theme Chooser" themes without CyanogenMod.

WeatherSignal

Your Android phone is crammed full of sensors. Some phones have temperature and pressure sensors, and the Galaxy S4 even measures humidity. WeatherSignal uses all those functions together to make your phone a tiny, self-contained weather station. Once you've collected the data, you can keep it for yourself in graph display, export it to a CSV file, or share it with WeatherSignal's servers to create a real-time world weather map.
--
As featured in the New Scientist. WeatherSignal lets you use your cell phone as a mobile weather station. The app makes use of native phone sensors to display local atmospheric readings, which are then displayed on our live-updating weather map. By using WeatherSignal you are becoming a part of the most ambitious weather crowdsourcing project in the world – helping to record weather patterns on a more localized level than ever before.

focus@will

If you work on the computer all day like yours truly, you need to check out Focus@Will. It's a great web service that plays music specifically meant to help you focus, in a variety of genres. The app isn't all that great (it's basically a copy of the website, and only works in landscape) but it's got the music, and that's what matters. Especially if your employer takes exception to you using the web for "entertainment" purposes. The service costs four bucks a month, but comes with a free trial.
--
Focus@will is a new neuroscience based music service that helps increase your attention span up to 400% when working, studying, writing and reading. It’s for anyone who needs to be productive on demand when working to a deadline. For instance, journalists, lawyers, students, writers and coders. Research has shown it is extremely effective for 2 out of 3 people. There is a 3 week full access trial period, after which you can either subscribe for $3.99 per month or $34.99 per year or you may continue to use the service for free, time limited to 100 minutes per session.

HALO)))

The Halo feature of the Paranoid Android ROM has garnered a lot of attention over the last few weeks. And if you run Paranoid Android, this app will let you set notifications for the HALO system for any app. For the rest of you... it doesn't really do anything. Though you could put a permanent link to an app in your notification bar, if you wanted to. For some reason.
--
HALO))) adds any app you want as persistent notification. This app is optimized for Paranoid Android, meaning these notifications will not show in your shade and they'll only be available through your HALO anywhere. However, basic functionality will work with any ROM. THIS APP IS NOT HALO ITSELF,
this is a simple convenience function for those who want to launch any app in floating mode on the Paranoid Android rom. It might not be what you're looking for.

Floating Notifications

Floating Notifications doesn't have a Play Store listing just yet, but it's definitely worth checking out anyway. It's essentially the top-level notification feature from Facebook Home, extended to the rest of the phone, a lot like the Halo feature from the Paranoid Android ROM. Imagine it as a notification bar that you can place anywhere on the screen, and dismiss with a double-tap. Hit this link to see the XDA thread that is the current home of the project.

HueNotifier

So, a rear speaker, vibration motor, Pebble watch, and notification light aren't enough to ensure you don't miss that important email? Then fork out some cash for Philips' Hue-brand connected lightbulb, and install HueNotifier. This app can flash your bulbs any color you like for any app notification, albeit only once. You'll need to enable the app's accessibility service to allow it to apply the remote notifications.
--
Do you put your phone down forgetting it's on silent and miss important phone calls? Maybe you just put your phone down and walked into another room just as that text you were waiting on came in. With HueNotifier, this is no longer a problem. HueNotifier ties in with your existing Phillips Hue lightbulbs to turn your entire house into a notification light by flashing your houses lightbulbs when you get a notification.

Flib - a converter with memory

This is the prettiest unit converter you'll see today. Prove me wrong. But Flib is (a little) more than a pretty face - it includes conversions for length, area, mass, power, volume, time, pressure, data, and more, and learns which ones you use most often to present them first. You can even choose which of the (pretty!) color schemes you want to use.
--
Flib will learn your preferences and auto arrange your frequent choices at the top of the list. It is probably the most beautiful, intelligent and simple converter app you have ever used. It is the first converter app that embraces a flat design style throughout, while at the same time providing a frictionless user experience. It is also the first product from Ten Days One App project.

Week Calendar

There's not much to say about Week Calendar: it's a solid calendar app that's better than the stock version. Or at least, better than stock iCal on iOS, where it gained its huge following. The Android version syncs with Google Calendar, Exchange, and Facebook, and features a unique zooming UI that mimics desktop calendar programs while remaining relatively easy to use. A laundry list of features and customizable options should make our OCD readers happy.
--
Week Calendar is the most user friendly and all-round calendar app worldwide for everyone that needs to manage a busy schedule. Week Calendar works without setup using the Exchange, Google and other calendars you have configured on your Android device. You're too busy to spend a lot of time managing your schedule. That's why adding, repeating and moving events is made easy in Week Calendar. With its magnificent interface and intuitive usability, working with Week Calendar is a pleasure for both casual as extensive professional users.

ReadItToMe - Unique Handsfree

This is a pretty basic text-to-voice app, with the caveat that it works for most common notification types, including calls and texts, and translates" text speak" into normal language (or at least something your ears might recognize). It even works over Bluetooth. The Pro version of the app (just under three bucks) lets you do an automatic voice reply and works with a wider range of applications.

ReadItToMe Pro reads out your incoming callers, sms messages and other app notifications, translating txt speak into normal language. In ANY language. It's great for use whilst driving, cycling, running, walking, in the gym or any other time you need to be handsfree. The difference is that this one actually does useful things, like remind you of birthdays, track receipts, and alert you of flight statuses. Connect the app to Gmail, Facebook, Exchange and other services, and it will work its magic all by itself. You'll need Android 4.0 or later to try out the app.
--
EasilyDo gets you the right information and gets things done. It tells you the events you’ve been invited to attend, monitors your social feeds for important news from friends, warns you of bad weather, files receipts, tracks packages, and even helps you celebrate birthdays. Information automatically appears when you need it – no more digging through multiple apps! Connects to Facebook, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Exchange, IMAP, Evernote, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Mobario On-Top-Widget

Here's an interesting one. It's not really a widget, it's a floating, customizable app with links to a handful of cherry-picked social and news services. Swipe in from the right, and you'll get the links. Tap one, and you can see new news items or just post to your social network without ever leaving the app underneath. There are a lot of TV guide apps out there - what makes this one different? Well for starters, it looks pretty good: a consistent Holo theme never hurt anybody. Homesnap Real Estate

Those "For Sale" signs rarely include all the information you want when house hunting, perhaps most crucially the price. Homesnap Real Estate wants to help you out there: take a photo of a house, and the app will poll your GPS position and match it up to a database of homes on the market. The app keeps a record of all the homes you've tagged, and pushes alerts whenever new listings match the criteria you've selected. There's also a list of agents included, but take those with a grain of salt.
--
Snap a photo of any home to identify it and find out the value, the price it last sold for, how many bedrooms, how many baths, local schools, and much more. Explore homes for sale, open houses, recent sales, and check values for 90+ million homes in the USA from the comfort of your couch. Search by address, customize your search, drag the map or flick the list. When you snap, favorite, comment or recommend a home it is added to your photo stream, which is always up-to-date with the latest real estate info and prices.

Another house-hunting app, but this one ties in with Realtor.com, the official listing site for members of the gigantic National Association of Realtors. As with all apps of this type, the usefulness varies based on your location.

Plus, use our advanced search tools to save time and narrow in on the things you care about most, like pet-friendly apartments and parking. My Aio

Aio (Ay-eye-oh? Aeeeeow? I have no idea) is AT&T's new prepaid arm, and this is their account manager app. You get the basics: checking how many minutes/texts/data you've got left, paying your bill, adjusting your plan. Pretty standard stuff. The app looks surprisingly good, too - better than the orange and blue on everything AT&T for the last few years.
--
With My Aio you can manage your Aio wireless service wherever you are and whenever you want, as long as you have a Wi-Fi or network connection.
With this application, you will be able to easily manage account functions including:
1. View your Wireless data usage
2. Pay your bill
3. Add or remove wireless account features
4. Set up and manage Auto Pay
5. Contact customer care

You can check your remaining minutes, texts, and data, as well as see your bill and charges, but strangely you can't actually pay your bill through the app.

Yup, another cooking app. But this one might be of particular use to those of you who aren't all that good at cooking (like me - I specialize in eggs and hot sauce) thanks to the Photo Recipe feature. These recipes include photos for every step, Instructables-style, making them truly idiot-proof. Which is something that I can appreciate. The more typical social sharing and shopping list features are also present.

GoogleNowWallpaper HD

This app isn't technically a live wallpaper - it's a stand-alone app that uses some of those sweet-looking Google Now header images as your launcher wallpaper. The images are static (saving you a bit of battery life) but change as the day progresses. You'll need the app to apply them.
--
Get the Google Now style on your homescreen. This application changes your current wallpaper with a google now wallpaper based on your clock time. The wallpaper will be changed automatically in a certain time (configurable by user), selecting the right wallpaper. I think you can figure this one out for yourself. If you can't... ask your mother.

Anonymously find friends who are down for the night. Your friends will never know you're interested unless they are too. (Completely private & discreet until both friends are down to bang.)
1. Sign in with Facebook: So you can see your friends (don't worry - it's discreet).
2. Pick the friends you want to Bang: We will only show your friends that you're interested if they are too.
3. Message Each Other: Once we know you're both down, we'll send you both an email - when and where is up to you.
4. B-a-n-g: Yup, that's right. Slow, fast, rough, or soft you decide how it goes. Stay safe.
