New Chromecast with updated design now official for $35

Back in September some lucky individual was able to walk into a Best Buy, buy a Chromecast, and walk out with a brand new device that wasn’t actually official. Now here we are a few weeks later and the newest version of the streaming device is now the real deal.

Google’s event today was primarily focused on the biggest hardware additions, including the Pixel 3 and Pixel Slate, but the company also launched a brand new Chromecast. The new streaming device plugs directly into the TV as usual via HDMI, and includes microUSB cable for power. The new Chromecast offers 1080p HD viewing at 60fps (Google says it’s 17% faster than the previous model), so don’t expect 4K support. That’s only available in the Chromecast Ultra, which didn’t get updated today.

The new Chromecast features a matte black color option as well as a chalk (white) variant. It works with 2.4Ghz and 5GHz Wi-Fi networks and it still supports Android, iOS, macOS, and Windows for streaming content to your Also included is support for multi-room audio, so you can play music in sync that is also playing on Google Home smart speakers throughout the house.

Google’s new Chromecast retails for $35 and it’s available now.
