Xiaomi intros Mi 8 Pro with in-display fingerprint sensor, Mi 8 Lite

Xiaomi this week introduced two variants of its Mi 8 flagship, including a new model with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

First up, the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro features many of the same specs as the standard Mi 8, including its 6.21-inch 2248×1080 AMOLED display and Snapdragon 845 processor. It’s got one big change, though, and that’s that it lacks the rear fingerprint reader found on the Mi 8, instead relying on an in-display fingerprint sensor. This gives the device a cleaner, more attractive look.

Xiaomi is also offering a version of the Mi 8 Pro with 8GB of RAM, whereas the standard Mi 8 topped out at 6GB. (There was a special “Explorer Edition” of the Mi 8 that came with 8GB.) The other notable change with the Mi 8 Pro isn’t as great as the other two, and that’s that Xiaomi shrunk the battery size to 3000, down from the 3400mAh battery found in the Mi 8.

Other features of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro include a dual rear camera setup with a main 12MP wide angle sensor with OIS and an f/1.8 aperture and a 12MP telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture. There’s a 20MP front-facing camera, too, along with face unlock functionality, Quick Charge 4.0+ fast charging, and USB-C.

Xiaomi will launch the Mi 8 Pro in China on September 21st. The new device will be available with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for CNY 3199 ($468 USD) or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for CNY 3599 ($526 USD).

Also announced by Xiaomi this week is the Mi 8 Lite. It’s not quite as high-end as the Mi 8 Pro, but its price tag is quite a bit lower. The spec list for the Mi 8 Lite includes a 6.26-inch 2280×1080 display, 2.2GHz octa-core Snapdragon 660 processor, and a 3350mAh battery with USB-C charging.

Xiaomi has also included a dual rear camera setup on the Mi 8 Lite that includes a 12MP main sensor with 1.4um large pixels and an f/1.9 aperture as well as a 5MP sensor. There’s a fingerprint reader on the Mi 8 Lite’s backside, too. Around front is a 24MP camera with AI features like background blur and scene recognition.

The Mi 8 Lite will come a few days after the Mi 8 Pro, launching in China on September 25th. Pricing will start at CNY 1399 ($205 USD) for the model with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of built-in storage. The 6GB/64GB model will cost CNY 1699 ($248 USD) and the top-end 6GB/128GB version will cost CNY 1999 ($292 USD).
