Google confirms it’s not launching a smartwatch this year

While the majority of the attention for what Google has planned this year is focused on the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL, there are some folks out there who have been keeping an eye on rumors of the company launching a Pixel-branded smartwatch this year alongside those new handsets. But it looks like we can put a rest to those rumors now.

Tom’s Guide is reporting that Google has confirmed it will not be launching a smartwatch this year. Miles Barr is Google’s Director of Engineering for Wear OS and he said that Google is “not there yet” when it comes to a “one-size-fits-all” watch, saying that Google is instead focused on its partners for now:

To think of a one-size-fits-all watch, I don’t think we’re there yet. Our focus is on our partners for now.

But it doesn’t look like the idea is completely off the table for some point in the future. When asked what the “ideal Pixel Watch” might look like, Barr said that the device would integrate Google Assistant and machine learning in big ways, which isn’t surprising in the slightest considering how important Assistant is to Google these days.

The sad news is that it looks like we’ll be waiting a bit longer before we get to see what Google thinks the “perfect” smartwatch is.

Were you looking forward to the Pixel Watch becoming a reality this year?
