ZTE granted temporary reprieve from US ban

ZTE has been banned from conducting business in the US since April for violating sanctions. The company has paid the $1 billion fine and negotiations with the US government are ongoing, but the US Commerce Department has decided to temporarily lift the ban so ZTE can keep its products running.

The ban will last until August 1 and does not allow for ZTE to create new business. Rather it’s aimed at giving ZTE a chance to maintain equipment and consumer products both on the hardware and software sides. This seems more of a pro-consumer move than leniency towards ZTE.

The company isn’t out of the woods yet, but it seems that it is progressing towards a lifting of the US ban. Whether it’ll go through in the end is unknown so all we can do is wait and watch.
