The Oppo Find X features pop-up front and rear cameras

Smartphone manufacturers want to offer as much screen real estate as possible, which means bezels are getting reduced and we’re starting to see unique new design choices.

That started with the notch with the Essential Phone and Apple’s iPhone X, to which a lot of Android manufacturers adopted pretty quickly. However, some companies, like Vivo, are trying to whittle down those bezels and not compromise with a notch.

To get there, pop-out cameras are one idea that appear to be catching on. Which brings us to the Oppo Find X, which is getting announced today in Paris, France. Oppo says its design for the Find X means the handset can boast a screen-to-body ratio of 92.25%. It can get there thanks to the pop-out camera system, which takes things one step further and includes both the front-facing camera and the rear cameras.

The Oppo Find X has a mechanized pop-out function, which The Verge says takes about 0.5 seconds to pop into place. When the phone is off or the camera app isn’t engaged, the cameras are completely hidden. But when activated, the camera unit will pop out, revealing a 25MP front-facing camera and a pair of rear cameras, with one being a 16MP shooter and the other a 20MP camera.

The Oppo Find X doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner, so it relies on a 3D facial scanning feature for authentication.

As far as the general specs are concerned, the Oppo Find X has a 6.4-inch OLED 1080p HD display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and 8GB of RAM under the hood, and storage options that go up to 256GB of built-in storage. The Find X battery measures in at 3750mAh and it’s running Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box under Oppo’s proprietary Color OS. It is a dual-SIM smartphone.

Oppo says this will be the first phone it sells in the North American and European markets, with more specific pricing and launch dates getting unveiled at a later date.

What do you think of the Oppo Find X’s design?
