Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium offers 4K display and dual rear cameras

It has been almost two months since Sony officially unveiled its high-end Xperia XZ2, but it looks like the company is ready to launch a more premium version of the handset.

The Xperia XZ2 Premium is now official. There are certain elements of both phones that are similar, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and Android 8.0 Oreo, but Sony has put some noteworthy changes in place to make the Xperia XZ2 Premium really stand out compared to the standard XZ2.

The Xperia XZ2 Premium boasts a 5.8-inch 4K display (compared to the 5.7-inch Full HD+ HDR panel on the standard XZ2). There is 6GB of RAM in the XZ2 Premium (up from 4GB), and the battery inside the XZ2 Premium is measured in at 3540mAh, bulked up from the standard model’s 3180mAh.

The other big change? The cameras. The XZ2 only has one camera on the back, but the XZ2 Premium hops on the dual camera bandwagon. The color sensor is 19MP while the monochrome sensor is 12MP. Sony says this new camera setup means it is prepared for “extreme low-light shooting”, and it has an ISO 51,200 sensitivity when shooting stills.

Sony will be adding a portrait mode (which it calls Bokeh Mode) and black-and-white capture mode in Q3 2018.

The Xperia XZ2 Premium will be available in Chrome Black and Chrome Silver when it launches this summer. There is no word on pricing just yet, but the standard XZ2 retails for around $800 unlocked, so this premium model is likely going to cost a bit more.
