AT&T 5G Evolution coverage expands to an additional 117 markets

AT&T has its sights set on launching its 5G network before the end of the year, but before that, it’s building up its 5G Evolution network, which utilizes 4G LTE technologies for faster data speeds.

The big blue network announced almost a year ago that it had launched 5G Evolution service in Austin, TX, and, since then, the network availability has expanded quite a bit. That includes an announcement made recently by AT&T, confirming that it has brought 5G Evolution to 117 new markets across the United States. With the new expansion, 5G Evolution coverage is now available in 141 markets.

AT&T is adding some major cities to the list, with Boston, MA; Los Angeles, CA; Louisville, KY; and San Antonio, TX getting tossed into the mix. AT&T says it plans on covering 500 markets later this year, including Portland, OR and Seattle, WA.

As a refresher, 5G Evolution isn’t proper 5G. It takes advantage of 4G LTE technologies like 256 QAM, carrier aggregation, and 4×4 MIMO to boost download speeds on supported devices. The handsets that support 5G Evolution include the Galaxy S8, S8+, S8 Active, Galaxy S9, S9+, Galaxy Note 8, the Moto Z2 Force Edition, and the LG V30. That list will surely grow as new handsets get announced and AT&T continues to expand 5G Evolution coverage.
