Android P final release coming Q3 2018

Today Google released its first Android P Developer Preview, and while the prospect of a new major Android update is exciting, not everyone wants to run beta software on their smartphone. Good news for those people, because we now know when the final Android P release is coming.

Google says that the final release of Android P will come in Q3 2018. Before then, we’ll get five developer previews. DP1 arrived in mid-March, DP2 is slated to arrive in early May (right around Google I/O 2018), DP3 with final APIs will come in early June, DP4 will roll out in late June, and DP5 will arrive in late July.

The third quarter runs from July 1 through September 30. That means that if Google is planning a fifth developer preview for late July, we could see the final Android P release sometime in August or September.

Of course, the final Android P release coming in Q3 2018 doesn’t mean that that’ll be when everyone gets the update. That’s when Google will release it to AOSP, which device makers can then use to customize for their own devices. Owners of Google Pixel and Pixel 2 phones will likely get Android P around the same time as this Q3 2018 release, but owners of other devices will probably have to wait a bit longer.
