LG is going to rebrand its G smartphones this year

Back in 2012, LG launched the Optimus G smartphone. By the time 2013 rolled around, the Life’s Good crew dropped “Optimus” from its flagship lineup and went with “G”. The LG G2 launched that year and we’ve had a new G-branded flagship smartphone every year since. But it looks like LG is planning to rebrand that particular lineup of flagship smartphones moving forward.

LG will be changing the naming scheme of its G-series flagship lineup this year, according to an LG official speaking to Digital Daily. The options the company is considering include a two-digit numbering system or a different name entirely.

An LG spokesperson explained that rebranding smartphones isn’t uncommon, saying that Apple and Samsung have done the same thing:

“‘Rebranding flagship models is nothing new, and Samsung and Apple have done so for their own flagships,’ an LG official told The Investor, adding that the naming of the upcoming LG smartphone has not yet been decided.”

Some market watchers suggest that LG sees the lower number on its flagship G-series as suggesting to consumers that it is not quite as good as what’s being offered by its competition. HTC has the U11, Apple has the iPhone 8/8 Plus and iPhone X, and Samsung has the Galaxy S8/S8+ and Galaxy Note 8. Each of those models will see higher numbers launched this year, while LG’s G-series smartphone this year would be the G7 if it followed the regular naming pattern.

Meanwhile, LG’s V-series has the new V30, so it will be interesting to see if LG opts to use the two digit naming scheme for the G-series, too.

We’ll likely see the rumored name crop up before the new flagship is announced, which is expected to happen at Mobile World Congress in February, so we don’t have long to wait.
