CES 2016 News! Free Jide Remix OS for PC, SHIELD TV Receiving Marshmallow! – XDA TV

It's Friday, January 8, 2016, and let's talk about what happened this week over at XDA-developers.com.

This week, obviously the biggest news is CES. I'm going to talk about a lot of it here, but for the stuff that wasn't specifically on the XDA site, I'll be making a news recap video over on my own channel, so check the links down below for that, if you're interested.

Huawei rolled out a couple of new Android Wear watches, specifically aimed at women. They also announced the availability of the gold Nexus 6P here in the US, a new 10 inch tablet, the MediaPad M2, and global availability of their Mate 8 flagship device.

Casio came forward with a new Android Wear watch which actually looks more like a traditional sports watch than almost any other one I've seen so far, and it comes with a ridiculous amount of activity and weather sensors built into it… and no pricing or availability info.

Polaroid, of all companies, announced a couple of new devices in various sizes, called Power and Snap, and they seem to be somewhat reasonably priced… except they're running Lollipop, and they won't say what processors they're running, so that's a bit disconcerting.

BLU unveiled a couple of new devices, the VIVO 5 and VIVO XL, loaded down with MediaTek chips, mid-range specs, USB type-C ports, and decently large batteries, priced at $200 and $150, respectively, and becoming available later this month or in February.

Xiaomi announced a new flagship device, the Mi 5, coming in February, and it's actually going to have the Snapdragon 820, which is great to hear. Other than that, the specs look pretty decent, 3 or 4 gigs of RAM, 32 or 64 gigs of storage, dual sim, 5.2″ display, 3600 milliamp hour battery, USB Type-C, and Android 6 for between $300 and $350 US Dollars, not bad at all.

"ZTE announced the Grand X 3 and the Avid Plus, both decidedly low-end devices, with the X 3 coming in at $130 and no price mentioned for the Avid Plus."

Alcatel OneTouch is bringing out a new family of devices, the Pixi 4, which will have 3 phones and a tablet, with sizes from 3.5, 4, and 6 inches for the phone, and 7 inches for the tablet, but no pricing or exact specs are known.

Asus launched the Zenfone Max, with its massive 5,000 milliamp hour battery, and the ZenWatch 2, in India this week. Strangely enough, the ZenFone Max is only 10,000 Rupees, where the ZenWatch 2 starts at 12,000 Rupees.

Lenovo has launched the Vibe K4 Note in India, with some mid-range specs and a 12,000 Rupee price tag. Speaking of Lenovo, they sent out press invites to an event being held this evening (it's the 7th while I'm recording this) to announce a partnership with Google surrounding Project Tango. Unfortunately I haven't heard anything quite yet, but I generally find anything Tango-related to be interesting, so I'll be on the lookout for more.

There were a couple of crowdfunding stories that popped up this week. The Nextbit Robin received a new, slightly delayed, release date, of February 16th, so if you preordered it, be aware that it's not going to be showing up this month. But that's better news than what came from Jolla, who announced that, since they had some financial challenges at the end of 2015, they'll only be sending out a small batch of tablets, meaning not all of the backers are actually going to be receiving tablets. Unfortunately, that's one of the potential downfalls of crowdfunding, and they haven't, and probably won't, say who will be receiving them, or how they're deciding that.

In slightly better news, Jide, the company behind the Remix Mini and the Jide Ultra-tablet, has announced they're releasing Remix OS 2.0 as a free download on January 12th, and it's actually designed to run on most Intel and AMD devices, meaning PC and Mac. So if you've been interested in checking out their take on Android, but haven't shelled out for their hardware yet, you'll actually be able to put it on a USB drive in a few days and check it out on your computer, complete with Google Play services.

Moving on to some Android updates, Nvidia has announced that Android 6 is coming to the SHIELD TV and the original Shield Tablet… *YES*… They've also released Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance exclusively for the SHIELD TV, coming in at $15. I've been checking it out a bit, and I've got to say, so far it's pretty awesome.

Xiaomi has started rolling out MIUI 7.1 Stable to the Mi 2, 2S, Redmi 1S, 2, Note Prime, and Mi Pad at least, so be on the lookout for that if you're already on a MIUI 7 build, or head over to their site to flash it yourself.

The Moto X Play has started receiving Marshmallow in India and Brazil, and the 2015 Moto G has started receiving it as well, and the OTA for that one has been captured and made available.

Only a couple of stories from the forum, an unofficial build of CM 12.1 is available for the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 thanks to XDA Senior Member DarkFrenzy. And Chainfire released a new beta build of SuperSU, version 2.66, to deal with a deep sleep issue on the Galaxy S6 Marshmallow Beta.

Finally, 3 other videos were posted to XDA TV this week. A massive giveaway in conjunction with a bunch of other websites and channels was announced, so go check that out. A contest to win one of three Honor 5X phones was announced, along with forums for the device being launched, and a video of TK showing his first impressions of the device. And finally, TK did an interview with Chainfire at CES talking about IonVR collaborating with Intel and their RealSense technology.
