What The Community Want From A Custom Rom

Earlier this week we asked you what you wanted most from your custom ROMs, your answers flooded in and we quickly saw trends forming. Developers, when creating your next ROM consider taking a few minutes to read through what the community would like from it.

"Honestly, what turns me off from most ROMs is the name. When it's something like "HYPERALPHA LIQUIDBUTTER FACEMELTER [SMOOTHBATTERY] [MEGASTABLE]" and it's just some skins and a new kernel, I roll my eyes and move on …      … it all feels horrifically unprofessional." – koiulpoi

"I am with you on that one. My advice to ROM developers, don't use names that sound like a high school kid created it. Make it easy to type, those that need/want to use ADB to copy would rather not have to type a really long ROM name that is case sensitive. Nor, have to copy one that is that long either. It makes the console scroll for ages." – ciphertext

It's not hard to see why the community dislike thread titles like these, you do not have to include every piece of information you think may attract a user in the title, it's what the main body is for. It's a sure fire way to keep members out of your thread.

"The main thing I look for is new development. I dont care about the same features we have seen for years. So I something new. I dont care what the name is. Stability is not an issue either. If I want stable I'll use a stock based rom." – Latheryin

"No useless bloatware or features (Changing the statusbar clock color is cool, but… what's the point exactly?) Stable enough for use as a daily driver (can play music, use the phone, send texts, surf the web, etc.) Active development and timely updates. It's hosted somewhere that when I click the link isn't going to throw all these useless ads and links at me that I have to dig through to find the correct download button, Sources are posted" – Ph0enix_216

no one likes booting up their device and finding a host of unnecessary apps, people deserve the freedom to choose their own apps and just because you think the office app or games etc that you use is superior does not necessarily mean that others will share your sentiment. Hosting is also an important aspect of the experience, it is for that very reason that we decided earlier this week that we can no longer recommend Dev-Host.

"I look for anything that brings an abandoned by the manufacturer device back to life. I could never think of using (even now) my ancient devices (HTC Legend and Experia X8) without custom ROMs.
I've never seen a stable stock or custom ROM though, on any device I've held… However, I've always admired custom ROMs as they are in most cases superior in look and features than stock ones. So, what I do look for is just the rebirth of a doomed device." – user700512

"1)Stability. I know that sometimes glitches occur and devs are not the omnigods who have time and resources to work every possible scenario for some certains bug to occur, but pleasant, smooth and user-friendly experience is what I crave.
2) Massive battery life. I use Amplify and Power Nap on a daily basis, but I also consider the "barebone" life of ROM without such eternal modules. Funny thing: Xposed on my phone (OnePlus One on Exodus 5.1) crashed, leaving all the modules inactive for about 12 hours until I've found out. Drain increased to 200% of average overnight drain, from 2% to 4%. Majestic anyway.
3) Getting a 100% from camera. I have encountered some ROMs that had all the drivers for camera written from the scratch, which unlocked some killer features not otherwise available (1080p front-facing vids, 1080p 60fps back vids)." – Jaromir

We saw hundreds of comments asking for these, battery life, stability and performance are the central aspects of any ROM. Without even one of these the UK is greatly impacted, they are the first thing people notice in a ROM and the first thing they remember about one they have used before. Perfecting a ROM is an incredibly difficult task but many small favorable adjustments are not difficult to achieve and can increase the popularity of your ROM significantly.
