T-Mobile's Website Now Has A New Software Update Progress Meter To Help Track OTAs

General users may not care all that much about software updates, but we smartphone geeks anticipate their arrival with the kind of enthusiasm that most holidays fail to muster. So T-Mobile has added a tracker to its website that will help folks like us keep tabs on over-the-air updates for high-end devices.

TMobileUpdateProgress

T-Mobile's software update tracker breaks the process down into three stages: Manufacturer Development, T-Mobile Testing, and Completed. The first step marks the point at which a manufacturer and T-Mobile agree that a device will get an update to the latest version of Android and begin integrating Google's changes. The second step marks the point where a phone or tablet goes through T-Mobile's certification process. After that, the over-the-air update rolls out, you check our site to read about what's new, and everything is complete.

You can run just about any GSM device on T-Mobile, but this tracker only keeps up with some of the big names. The devices that currently make the list are as follows:

  • Nexus 5 (Completed)
  • Nexus 7 (2013) (Completed)
  • HTC One M7 (T-Mobile Testing)
  • HTC One M8 (Completed)
  • Galaxy Note 3 (T-Mobile Testing)
  • Galaxy Note 4 (Manufacturer Development)
  • Galaxy Note Edge (Manufacturer Development)
  • Galaxy S5 (Completed)

The tracker doesn't tell you when an update is going out, so if you're looking for that kind of closure, sorry. Oftentimes the answer is simply, it'll be ready when it's ready.

Born and raised in the rural South, Bertel knows what it's like to live without 4G LTE - or 3G, for that matter. The only things he likes sweeter than his tea are his gadgets, and while few objects burn more than a metal phone on a summer day, he prefers them that way anyway.
