Prynt: The First Instant Camera Case
The photography sphere has a somewhat jerky lifeline, divided into the realms of print and digital photos, separated by a colossal ravine that few dare to brave. Portable printers were one of the frontrunners in this field, but the trend didn’t catch on due to their bulk and lack of versatility. Prynt is a brainchild of those printers, with their proverbial bridge being a unique, out-of-the-box smartphone case. The Prynt Case, as it is titled, functions in three simple steps – plug in the phone, snap a picture and print it. And it doesn’t stop at that! Each printout is more than just a photo, with augmented reality functionality allowing you to scan a printed picture and view a small video that was captured and uploaded to the cloud at the time of clicking the photograph.
Working
The Prynt case snaps on to your device just as a regular case would, and supports a large number of Android and iOS devices, with an adjustable base in case you switch phones. Power is not a concern, as the case has a dedicated battery, and doesn’t use WiFi or Bluetooth, thus producing a more than acceptable battery life. When you capture a photograph using the Prynt app, a short video is recorded and then the image is transferred to the case and subsequently printed out. At this point you’re probably pondering things like ink, cartridges, etcetera. But the printing mechanism is part of the case’s wondrous nature – the case comes with a special set of papers, each one specially produced to capture digital images with ink embedded within the paper itself, producing a no-hassles, mess-free output. The recorded video is uploaded to the cloud, and when you scan any printed photos, the video plays, making you relive the moment.
Availability
The idea for the Prynt case was born in January 2014, and since then the startup has gone through a startup accelerator and produced various prototypes. As they draw closer to release, they’ve selected KickStarter as their funding platform, and created a campaign with a goal of $50, 000, the early bird backing option getting you a case and 10 sheets of paper at $79, and the regular backing getting you the same at $99, with cases available in three colors – pink, blue and white. The campaign was met with tremendous enthusiasm, and Prynt has raised $321,229 – more than four times their goal – with 32 days to go.
Bottom Line
The Prynt case is classic digital photography with a Polaroid-like twist and has emerged as a beautiful, portable and versatile accessory. The ink-free printing mechanism eases the experience of printed photos, and the paper is water and tear resistant to provide a lasting print. While these features by themselves make the Prynt case an enticing product, the minds behind it have kicked it up a notch with their augmented reality approach, and if you were previously at the edge, this feature pushes you take the plunge and get one for yourself. Head over to the Prynt KickStarter page to back the campaign and get your very own Prynt case.
