HD Camera: A new, feature rich camera app
I’ll review a camera app, I said. It’ll be easy. I take tons of pictures all the time. Except, it turns out I really don’t know much about cameras or taking pictures. I guess I’m the kind of guy that just points, clicks, and hopes Google+ will make my picture pretty after it gets uploaded. But do you know a thing or two about cameras? Wish you had a little more control over your phone’s camera settings? Or do you feel like your current or stock camera app is lacking? HD Camera is a new camera app that has only been out about a month and is packed full of features that could be calling your name.
Compared to Google’s stock camera app, HD Camera has lots of bells and whistles front and center on the camera interface. Some of the features HD camera brings is a button to turn the shutter sound on and off, real time effects, and exposure adjustment by swiping the screen. Additionally, the settings menu is deep with picture quality and aspect ratio settings, continuous shooting mode frequency, and different seen modes for fireworks or sports. Then there are the things I don’t fully understand: Spot photometry, ISO, and anti-banding settings. HD camera also comes with a “Shake reducing” shooting mode which seemed more like a mode that wouldn’t let me take a picture until I wasn’t shaking anymore, but I suppose it could be handy. Comparing HD Camera to the stock Google camera app the exposure used when taking the image was different, but both apps could produce good quality photos. I really appreciate the ability to use a burst shot mode with HD camera which is something that is lacking within Google’s stock camera app.
I only ran into a few issues while using HD Camera and they all seemed to have to do with the theme application feature. As I clicked through the different themes such as aqua, sepia or posterize the theme seemed to get stuck on posterize rather than returning to normal. Also on occasion I would see a bug where the preview of the camera would get this green flickering. It wouldn’t actually effect the resultant image, but I’m sure the developers don’t want that there. Now, before you get turned off by these bugs in the app, in the week I’ve had HD Camera installed on my phone reviewing this camera app it’s updated twice. That really impresses me and shows me that this is an app that I want to support. I like supporting app developers that get behind their apps and are always trying to improve them. I have confidence that these bugs I found will soon be squashed and future bugs will continue to be squashed as well.
Overall, HD Camera is a good camera app that I believe is fairly feature rich. There are a lot of stock camera apps that have many of these features, but HD Camera may offer you some extra control that you didn’t have before. HD Camera comes in two flavors, a free option that only allows one to take pictures up to 1.9 MP or a paid version ($0.99) that gives you full access to your cameras MPs. The free version can give you a good taste of the HD Camera features before you go and drop the cost of a McChicken on the Pro version.
