HTC J Butterfly unveieled as the HTC One (M8) alternative for Japan

After months of waiting, smartphone buyers in Japan will finally be able to get their hands on their own version of HTC’s flagship smartphone – the new HTC J Butterfly HTL23. Because that last part of the name really doesn’t add any value, we’ll simply be referring to the phone as the HTC J Butterfly from now on. On the inside, the HTC J Butterfly is nearly an exact copy of the HTC One (M8), but we wouldn’t blame you if you mistook it for the HTC One (E8) due to its plastic shell. While the HTC One (M8) metal construction makes the phone splash resistant, the HTC J Butterfly is rated at IPX7, which means you can fully submerge your phone in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes.

When it comes to optics, the HTC J Butterfly takes features from both the One (M8) and (E8) by swapping the UltraPixel DuoCamera setup from the One (M8) with the more traditional 13 megapixel sensor from the One (E8). The setup still enables uFocus and Dimension Plus features when editing your images, but gives users a much larger picture to work with. Yes, low-light performance will definitely be impacted, but it seems the general public simply doesn’t get what HTC is trying to do with UltraPixels.

The HTC J Butterfly will be shown to the press on August 19 on Tokyo and will be available from KDDI in Japan late next months. If the August 19 date sounds familiar, it’s because that’s the same day HTC has schedules a press event in New York City. It’s unclear if the two events are related in any way, but the 2012 HTC Droid DNA on Verizon was based on the original HTC Butterfly.
