Square Enix’s venerable smash hit, Dragon Quest VIII, has found a new home on Android and iOS. Originally released in 2004 for the Sony Playstation 2, Dragon Quest VIII is the first entry in the beloved franchise to be fully 3D. Selling an impressive 4.9 million units, Dragon Quest VIII is second only to its successor, Dragon Quest IX, in terms of sales.

Square Enix is touting a new streamlined input scheme which will allow players to control the game with a single hand. Japanese video demos of the title have been run in portrait mode, rather than in landscape, so the target audience (smartphone users) is no mystery.

Dragon Quest VIII continues the tradition of JRPG excellence with art duties still being manned by Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame, cel-shaded graphics and a score consisting of well received orchestral arrangements.

If you have never experienced the grandeur of Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2 or wish to experience it again and on the go, then you can head over to the Google Play Store and download a copy now for the premium price of $19.99.

Did you know:

The release of Dragon Quest III saw a rash of truancies and game related muggings that earned the attention of the Japanese Diet (Japan’s legislature). Before a law could be drafted, Square Enix (then Enix Corporation) enforced a self-imposed regulation of only releasing Dragon Quest games on weekends and national holidays. The tradition continued from 1988 until 2013, with the release of the Japanese exclusive MMORPG, Dragon Quest X.
