‘Google Play Fitness’ information continues to trickle out

Remember that rumor that surfaced last week that claimed that Google is prepping a new service to help you track your fitness? The program is expected to debut later this month at Google I/O, but it looks like we won’t have to wait that long to get more details.

A new report out of Android Police says that the fitness-focused offering will likely be known as “Google Play Fitness,” which would make sense considering that Android’s also got “Google Play Services” and “Google Play Games.”

Speaking of Google Play Games, it’s said that Google Play Fitness will work similarly to Play Games. The service will aggregate data from any apps that are connected to it and give users an easy place to find all of their health and fitness info. Some of the data that Play Fitness will show include motion, speed and distance traveled.

It’s also said that Android Wear, Google’s wearable platform, will play a role in Play Fitness. Android Wear is expected to tie into the Play Fitness service, regardless of whether the device maker has included support for Play Fitness or not.

Wearable devices, including fitness trackers, are a major part of the mobile industry right now. There are several Android-friendly devices, but it makes sense for Google to step up with its own fitness service. Doing so will give Android a unified place to aggregate fitness data and make it easier for users to track their health.

Do you use any apps to track your health and fitness? If so, which ones?
