Amazon’s Fire Phone is official

Amazon has just announced their first entry into the mobile handset market called the Fire Phone. Where their Fire line of tablets is geared toward being affordable and making up for a loss of revenue on hardware with content, the Fire Phone is unique device with a top of the line price tag.

Coming in as an AT&T exclusive for $199 with a two-year contract, the Fire Phone is lacking compared to other high-end flagships when it comes to raw specs. It has a 4.7-inch 1280×720 display, 2GB of RAM, a 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800, 13MP OIS camera, 32GB base internal storage and is powered by Amazon’s own Fire OS. As you can see, the phone lies somewhere between a Nexus 5 and a Moto X specs wise. But that’s not what garners the device its high price tag.

Amazon has added a handful of extra features to the Fire Phone that set it apart from the crowd, the two biggest being Dynamic Perspective and Firefly. By utilizing 4 front-facing cameras, Amazon has created a unique user interface that allows for new levels of depth and interactivity. With Firefly, Amazon is cataloging the world around you. Amazon says they have a database of some 100 million items that Firefly will recognize when scanned by the Fire Phone. From real world items, like a jar of Nutella, to numbers on a business card. The Amazon Fire phone also features Mayday, for on device diagnostics and troubleshooting, X-Ray and Second Screen — all features we’ll go more in depth with in more posts this evening.

As for when you can buy the Fire Phone, Amazon has the device available to preorder now. Mentioned above, the price is $199 on contract for the 32GB model, or $649 contract free. What do you think of the Fire phone?
