LG G2 mini to make its way to store shelves in April

Everyone’s getting in on the mini smartphone craze. First we saw the Galaxy S III mini from Samsung, then the One mini from HTC and the Xperia Z1 Compact from Sony. The latest manufacturer to hop aboard the mini bandwagon is LG with its G2 mini, which is set to officially launch in the near future.

LG announced today that the G2 mini will begin arriving on store shelves in April. It’ll first land in countries that are a part of the Commonwealth of Independent States, like Russia and Ukraine, followed shortly thereafter by launches in Europe, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. The G2 mini will be available in Titan Black, Lunar White, Red and Gold color options. Unfortunately, LG hasn’t yet announced how much its mini device will cost, so for now potential buyers will just have to save up their pennies and hope that they’ve got enough when the G2 mini comes to town.

The G2 mini features a 4.7-inch 960×540 display, down from the 5.2-inch 1080p panel found on its big G2 sibling, as well as an 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.3-megapixel front cam. When it comes the processor that’s powering the G2 mini, there are actually a few different variants: the LTE model packs a 1.2GHz quad-core MSM8926 chip, the 3G version has a 1.2GHz quad-core MSM8226 CPU and the Latin American model comes with a 1.7GHz quad-core Tegra 4i chip. The Latin American unit also swaps the 8-megapixel shooter for a 13-megapixel one.

Rounding out the G2 mini’s spec sheet is 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, a microSD card slot and a removable 2440mAh battery. On the software side of things, LG is preloading the G2 mini with Android 4.4 KitKat and its own custom user interface, which includes features like the Knock On unlock method and Guest Mode.

While the G2 mini features the same design and name as LG’s flagship smartphone, the shrunken handset is quite a downgrade when it comes to display quality. That’s definitely a bummer for folks that want a “small” Android phone with high-end specs. Aside from its screen, the G2 mini’s got a respectable feature set for a mid-range smartphone, and it could be worth a look so long as LG prices it accordingly.
