OnePlus One display officially detailed by CEO

OnePlus today continued the steady trickle of spec updates for its OnePlus One smartphone by announcing details about the device’s display.

In the official OnePlus forums, CEO Pete Lau today revealed that the OnePlus One will feature a 5.5-inch 1080p display. Manufactured by Japan Display Inc., the screen will feature Touch On Lens modules to eliminate space between the touch sensor and display panel and increase its shatter resistance. Lau also says that the One will include power-saving technologies that can detect when a static image is being displayed and respond by reducing its power consumption.

Lau also explained how OnePlus came to the decision to use a 5.5-inch display on its device. Originally the company planned to go with a 5-inch screen, but after seeing increased consumer demand for phones with bigger screens, OnePlus opted to go with a 5.5-inch display. Lau went on to say that OnePlus managed to squeeze that 5.5-inch screen into a body that’s the same size as a phone with a 5-inch screen. He then pointed to the image below, teasing that the OnePlus One is hiding under that Sony Xperia Z1, which features a 5-inch screen and measures 5.68 x 2.90 x 0.33 inches in size.

So far we know that the OnePlus One will feature a 5.5-inch 1080p display, quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 16GB and 64GB storage options, LTE, CyanogenMod and a 3100mAh battery. We’re still missing details on the One’s cameras, but the device is shaping up to be a respectable piece of Android kit. Some folks may feel that a 5.5-inch screen is a tad large, but the fact that the One is similar in size to an Xperia Z1 suggests that it may not be too difficult to wield, even if the Z1 is known for having some pretty sizable bezels.
