All Google Pixels to get external mic support on October 18

The Google Pixel line of devices do not support external microphones, despite Google’s focus on the amazing camera on the last two years of device releases. People have been complaining about this as long as the devices have been on the market.

Fortunately, Google decided to finally listen to its customers. An old Pixel support thread about this issue has been updated by a member of the Pixel Camera engineering team confirming that not only will the new Pixel 3 support external mics, all old Pixels will be updated with the same support.

“Hi, folks — Isaac here from the Pixel Camera engineering team. I have been keeping an eye on this thread since the beginning and have good news. At the same time as Pixel 3 launch (October 18th), we will introduce support for Android-compatible plugged-in external microphones in the default camera app for all Pixels. I hope you all enjoy the update.”

We’re really glad to see previous devices get this functionality as well. The new model may now be out, but the cameras on the old models remain fantastic and perfectly capable of shooting good video with a proper stabilizer. The update launches October 18 so keep an eye out!
