Amazon is removing ads from the lock screen on Prime Exclusive phones

Showing advertisements on devices is one way that Amazon reduced the cost of a device for the end user, which extended to the Prime Exclusive program that started back in 2016.

Now, not quite two years after the program started, there is a big change coming. Beginning Wednesday, February 7, Amazon will no longer load lock screen advertisements or offers on Prime Exclusive phones. Amazon wants customers to be able to enjoy biometric security measures like fingerprint readers and facial recognition while also being able to customize the lock screen with photos and wallpapers.

For folks who already own an Amazon Prime Exclusive smartphone, a free update will arrive beginning this week to remove the lock screen ads and offers from the device.

Finally, Amazon confirmed that the Prime Exclusive phone lineup will still exist for Prime members and that unlocked devices will still be available with a discount from the standard price tag. However, the prices of all Prime Exclusive phones will increase by $20, and devices will still come with Amazon apps preloaded.

Amazon dropping the lock screen ads and offers, but still offering the phones for a discount is a pretty big move.
