HTC U11 official with Edge Sense squeeze feature, now available for pre-order

The battle of the Android flagships continues today with the debut of the HTC U11.

The main feature of the HTC U11 is called Edge Sense. With it, you can perform actions just by squeezing the sides of the device, and you can customize which app you want to launch with a squeeze. One example of this would be to launch the camera app by squeezing the sides of the HTC U11, then squeezing them again to capture a photo. This could come in handy when you’re trying to quickly snap a selfie with this phablet of a phone. You can also enable a long squeeze to set another action.

Speaking of phablet, the HTC U11 features a 5.5-inch 2560×1440 Super LCD 5 display, and above that is a 16-megapixel camera. Around back there’s a 12-megapixel camera with UltraPixel 3 technology, dual LED flash, OIS and EIS. Camera rating firm DxOMark rated the HTC U11’s camera a 90, which is the highest mobile phone camera score that it’s given out.

The HTC U11’s body features a glossy, “liquid” design like the one found on the HTC U Ultra that debuted earlier this year, and its IP67-rated for resistance to dust and splashes. Inside that body lives a Snapdragon 835 processor, 4/6GB of RAM, 64/128GB of storage, a microSD slot for adding more storage, fingerprint reader, and a 3000mAh battery.

The bottom of the phone is home to a USB Type-C port that’ll serve double duty as your charging port and your headphone jack, because there’s no 3.5mm headphone jack to be found here. There is a 3.5mm-to-USB-C adapter included in the box, though. HTC will also include a pair of USB-C earbuds that offer active noise cancellation.

HTC is also placing a focus on voice assistants with the U11. Included is Google Assistant, like other Nougat phones, but HTC U11 will also include support for Amazon Alexa. HTC says that Alexa will be available in the US, UK, and Germany within 30 days of the U11’s availability.

HTC has named Sprint the exclusive launch partner for the U11 in the US. Sprint will begin taking pre-orders for the U11 today ahead of its June 9 launch, and pricing will be $0 down and $29 per month for 24 months, or $696 total. Sprint customers that pre-order the HTC U11 will get two Amazon Echo Dots for free to get Amazon’s Alexa even deeper into your life.

If you’re not a Sprint customer, you can buy the HTC U11 unlocked from HTC.com and Amazon, with pre-orders starting today and and units shipping in June. Pricing is set at $649.

So there’s the HTC U11. The phone is certainly a high-end device on paper, and it’s got some unique features that could help it to stand out, like support for both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa and its Edge Sense feature. The flagship smartphone competition is fierce, so we’ll have to wait and see if the U11’s features can help it capture consumers’ minds and wallets.

Now that it’s official, what do you think of the HTC U11? Will you be pre-ordering one?
